VIDEO – Duality: A Dialog on the Comparison of Canon Law to Civil Law
Category
1-hour MCLE credit
Viewing time: 72 minutes
This video features the Honorable Troy L. Nunley, U.S. District Judge, Eastern District of California and Father C. Hightower, S.J., Superior of the Sacramento Jesuit Community. This dual presentation covers an exploration on the interpretation of law, in particular, Canon law and how that approach differs from the American civil system of interpretations. Judge Nunley’s perspective focuses on where American courts have given deference to Canon law in various rulings; i.e., rulings in the American civil system, not points of international law.
Participants will garner insights on how Canon law, in its design, is interpreted and therefore possible effects in American Civil Law.
It was a collaborative event sponsored by the Sacramento County Public Law Library and the St. Thomas More Society of Sacramento, an affiliate of the Sacramento County Bar Association.
