New Civil Home Court system in Sacramento

On November 10, 2025, Sacramento County Superior Court introduced major changes to how it handles law and motion matters and case management hearings in civil cases.

Historically, civil cases were assigned to either Department 53 or Department 54 for law and motion hearings, and unlimited cases to a separate department for periodic case management hearings. That changed on November 10, 2025.

From November 10 onward, four departments are designated “Civil Home Court” departments. Each civil case will be assigned to one of those four departments, which will handle both law and motion and case management duties. The assignment can be checked on the court’s Public Portal.

New cases will be assigned when filed. Existing cases may have been re-assigned, so check before scheduling a hearing.

Note: as of April 13, 2026, all matters that have been housed in the Gordon D Schaber courthouse at 720 9th St. and the Hall of Justice at 813 6th St. have been moved to the new Railyards courthouse, the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse, 500 G St., Sacramento CA 95814.

The Civil Home Court departments numbers have changed as follows:

  • Department 25 is now Department 8D
  • Department 28 is now Department 8C
  • Department 53 is now Department 16D
  • Department 54 is now Department 16C.
