User Friendly Legal Writing

This is a companion class to “Short, Clear, and Organized Legal Writing” offered at the Sacramento County Public Law Library.

Writing is a tool for communication. When we write, we communicate in ways that go beyond mere substance. Where we split paragraphs and sections, how we create and nest headings, how we start paragraphs, communicates to our reader. By understanding the many ways our writing communicates beyond the substance, we can make our writing easier to absorb and comprehend.

This class explores this concept through topics including structuring discussions of law and cases, signaling direction changes to the reader, knowing when to split paragraphs, creating helpful introductions, placing rebuttals and counterarguments, creating meaningful headings, building useful string cites with parentheticals, transitioning between paragraphs, organizing facts, and more.
