Habeas Training – Seeking Freedom for Clients With Unexecuted Final Orders of Removal
Hosted by the Sacramento County Public Law Library
Cost: Free
About the Program:β―Complementing Asian Law Caucus’s newly released habeas toolkit and practice guide, this training will focus on habeas petitions seeking freedom for immigrants with unexecuted final orders of removal, recently re-detained after living in their community for many years. The training and toolkit are focused on Ninth Circuit caselaw, but many of the arguments covered can be made in other circuits. This is a great session for new practitioners, law students, and legal clinic staff looking to deepen or sharpen habeas experience; attorneys from immigration and other sectors, including pro bono and those newer to habeas; and seasoned habeas practitioners wishing to compare notes and trends across jurisdictions.
About the Speaker:β― Ann is a graduate of Berkeley Law and received her Bachelorβs degrees in Anthropology and Environmental Studies from Washington University in St. Louis. She is a staff attorney in the Asian Law Caucus’s Immigrant Justice program. Her work focuses on providing direct legal services to immigrants who are detained and facing deportation, including by seeking their liberation through habeas petitions. Lee Ann previously worked alongside currently and formerly detained individuals to end their prolonged detentions and to hold private detention operators accountable for their abusive practices as a Justice Catalyst Fellow with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area.
