New Civil Home Court system in Sacramento

On November 10, 2025, Sacramento County Superior Court will introduce major changes to how it handles law and motion matters and case management hearings in civil cases.

Historically, civil cases were assigned to either Department 53 or Department 54 for law and motion hearings, and unlimited cases to a separate department for periodic case management hearings.

From November 10 onward, four departments are designated “Civil Home Court” departments. Each civil case will be assigned to one of those four departments, which will handle both law and motion and case management duties. The assignment can be checked on the court’s Public Portal.

New cases will be assigned when filed. Existing cases may have been re-assigned, so check before scheduling a hearing.

Important notes for the Civil Home Court transition period (Oct. 6-Nov. 10, 2025)

Pre-existing cases: The court re-assigned most existing cases as of Nov. 10, 2025, when Departments 25 and 28 began hearing law and motion matters. Double check your department before scheduling a hearing.

Motions filed during transition period: the reservation system is closed between October 6 and November 7, 2025. You can file a motion if necessary to meet a deadline, but you cannot reserve a hearing date. Instead, indicate the hearing date, time and place as “TBD.” On or after Nov. 10, you must make a reservation for the motion and then file and serve an amended notice of hearing. It is your responsibility to do this, or the motion will never be heard.

Hearings already scheduled for after November 10, 2025: Your hearing date, time and department may have changed. You should receive notice in the mail, but double check on the Public Portal to be sure.
