Immigration Law Series: Representing LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers (Webinar)

All MCLE courses in the Immigration Law Series are offered jointly with the Sacramento County Bar Association Immigration Law Section.

Join Leanna M. Sac for an overview of how to represent LGBTQ+ asylum seekers at the asylum office and in immigration court. Asylum claims based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity are often very strong when prepared well, and there are issues particular to these types of cases that can be anticipated and accounted for to give clients the best chance of having their applications granted. In this MCLE, we will go over some hypotheticals, and discuss how to advocate for clients with diverse and nuanced identities in a legal framework that often anticipates more black and white identity categories.

Leanna M. Sac is an immigration attorney with an office in Fair Oaks, California. She worked at a nonprofit called East Bay Sanctuary Covenant before and during law school as a Refugee Rights Advocate, and opened her own practice in January, 2021. The bulk of her practice is dedicated to humanitarian immigration processes, such as asylum (both affirmative and defensive), U Visas, T Visas, and VAWA. She also works on family petitions, green card applications, and naturalization (citizenship). Leanna offers services in English and Spanish.
